The Lab Technician will perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations by carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies by preparing specimens and samples. Constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment.

POSITION DUTIES:

Pre- Analytical:

Administrative duties include:

• keeping current and accurate quality-assurance records (including logs for requisitions, test results, reagents and maintenance)
• writing or updating a laboratory procedure manual
• taking inventory and ordering laboratory supplies
• maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for the safety manual required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
• maintaining records on regulated hazardous waste; and filling out forms required by regulations.
• specimen collection, labeling, preparation, processing, etc.
• logging and preparing specimens and logging the tests that will be sent to a reference laboratory
• assess specimen for rejection criteria (accept or reject);
• ensure specimen identification throughout the analytical process:
• Reading and following written policies and procedures as found in the laboratory

  Maintenance duties include:

• performing (and documenting) all preventive equipment maintenance
• calibration instruments (if indicated), performing validation studies after calibration and recording results
• troubleshooting any quality control or maintenance problems
• calling the equipment manufacturer's maintenance service when service is indicated.
• observing and practicing "universal precautions".
• perform and follow general operating procedures for laboratory.

Analytical:

• performing quality control tests and recording the results
• performing tests as listed on training documentation form as qualified to perform
• performing proficiency tests and reviewing the results with the laboratory director
• observing and practicing "universal precautions".

Post- Analytical:

• assess quality of analytical performance by checking results for validity using QC, know correlations with other analytes, reference ranges for age and sex of patient, reportable range of analyte and other factors which may affect test results
• record and/or report patient test results (sign and date report):
• ensure that all test results are seen by the physician and that abnormal and/or critical (panic) results are immediately brought to the physician's attention
• File reports for storage
• Perform shut-down procedures

Other duties:

• perform simple patient procedures when directed by physician
• perform office duties such as answer phone, data entry, etc.
