Job Description

SUMMARY:
The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist provides high-quality services to individuals with visual impairments in various settings, including schools, homes, and the community. Responsibilities include assessments, individualized instructional plans, and direct interventions to support independent navigation. The O&M Specialist collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and offers training to school staff, caregivers, and community members to enhance mobility and independence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
  • Proven ability to effectively evaluate, develop goals/objectives and administer services
  • Possess skills necessary to provide diagnostic/consultative/direct services in small/large groups to students ages birth – 26
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as on a professional team
  • Experience providing virtual O&M services (if seeking virtual employment)
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer/software use including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to provide inservice training to staff and parents on a variety of topics
  • Previous school experience with students with special needs
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Adapt environments, tools, and materials to improve access and independence for students with visual impairments.
  • Conduct assessments of students' orientation and mobility skills to identify needs and develop instructional plans.
  • Actively participate as part of an interdisciplinary team within the context of Individualized Education
  • Programs (IEP) or 504 plans.
  • Consult with teachers, specialists, educational assistants, and families to review and revise student goals, develop service plans, and provide recommendations.
  • Implement orientation and mobility techniques and strategies, instructing students, teachers, and families to support students' IEP objectives.
  • Maintain up to date records, documentation, and reports in compliance with state, federal, and district requirements.
  • Ensure that mobility aids and equipment are maintained in good working condition.
  • Prepare written reports, logs, and progress notes to document student progress and convey information to stakeholders.
  • Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction and services to students based on IEP goals.
  • Troubleshoot issues with assistive devices, ensuring proper function or providing alternative solutions.
  • Educate families and caregivers on strategies to promote students’ independence in various environments.
  • Collaborate and communicate with community agencies, educators, administrators, families, and students to support student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
  • Must keep the affairs of MarquetteAlger RESA and LEAs confidential at all times
  • Must exercise confidentiality and sound judgment in dealing with families, physicians, and staff.

  • Able to work flexible hours
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Must effectively orchestrate multiple activities/projects simultaneously to accomplish goals and use resources effectively
  • Must be organized, self-motivated and enthusiastic
  • Must successfully adapt/function independently within a variety settings
  • Position routinely requires regional travel in Marquette and Alger counties
  • If seeking virtual employment, must have reliable internet access
  • Occasional travel to other areas of the State may be required
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part time position (2-4 days/month). Must have regular and reliable job
attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job
