The Seattle University Department of Public Safety (DPS), part of the division of Student Development, is a community-and-solution oriented security organization. Position Summary

The Seattle University Department of Public Safety (DPS), part of the Student & Campus Life team, is a community-and-solution oriented safety and security organization. DPS plays an integral role in the university community by promoting a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment by grounding its work in the Jesuit educational tradition with a particular emphasis on cura personalis (care of the whole person). Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, the Associate Director, Public Safety Operations (ADPSO) provides oversight of all department operations, investigations, crime reporting, enforcement, victim/survivor follow up, and prevention programs and services provided by the department. The Associate Director supervises 1-2 full-time Assistant Director, four full-time shift supervisors, and one full-time Programs Supervisor.

Operations & Investigations (40%)
  • Under the general direction of the Director, the Associate Director provides administrative and operational support for a 24 hour, 365 days a year department of non-sworn, uniformed officer level staff, dispatchers, shift supervisors and administrative leadership and support staff. The ADPSO provides technical and administrative direction, recommends policies and procedures to the Director for development and distribution, and ensures staff compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Under the general direction of the Director, the Associate Director monitors the departmental operations budget and coordinates the purchase, maintenance, and inventory of supplies, assets, and equipment. The Associate Director maintains relationships with vendors and makes vendor, contract, and service recommendations to the Director.
  • The ADPSO oversees and coordinates the department's case investigation and follow up processes, tracks campus criminal and non-criminal incidents and reporting, and ensures that case documentation is secured and maintained, including related electronic, hardcopy, and video files.
  • The Associate Director oversees records management and crime analysis reporting, including the Annual Security and Fire Report. The Associate Director oversees uniformed field response to alarm activations and is responsible for coordinating efforts with Information Technology Services to troubleshoot alarm errors and false alarms. The Associate Director coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to assist in documenting criminal incidents for further investigation and to ensure that crime data is properly collected and reported to the campus community and federal agencies.
  • The Associate Director coordinates with various campus departments, including Transportation Services, Facilities, Conference and Events Services, Housing & Residence Life, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Institutional Equity, Human Resources, and others to ensure appropriate information is shared in a timely manner and to consult on safety-related issues. The Associate Director conducts or directs investigations at the request of these offices into various matters.
  • The ADPSO reviews, approves, and disseminates Public Safety reports.
  • In the event of a campus emergency, the Associate Director, at the direction of the Director, implements the university's emergency management procedures, including Timely Warning and emergency notifications.


Supervision (30%)

  • The Associate Director supervises, trains, and evaluates 1-2 full-time Assistant Directors, four full-time shift supervisors, and one full-time Programs Supervisor, ensuring that each of these staff perform their respective duties while providing development, coaching, and support.
  • The ADPSO also manages staff recruitment and hiring processes for the department. The Associate Director is the first point of contact for resolving performance concerns with and developing improvement plans for department staff. The Associate Director ensures ongoing professional development planned, support equipment and personnel are scheduled, and all training is tracked and verified. The Associate Director also monitors schedules to ensure that appropriate staffing levels are met in each functional area of the department.


Victim/Survivor/Student Support (15%)

  • The Associate Director coordinates follow up and care for victims/survivors of crime and other impactful incidents, refers them to on- and off-campus resources, and assists with reporting incidents to local law enforcement. The Associate Director, in collaboration with the Director, participates and assists in Threat Assessment Team and CARE Team evaluations and implementing necessary risk mitigation interventions.


Other Duties (15%)

  • The Associate Director is assigned to an on-call rotation with the Assistant Directors and may be called to a major incident or emergency scene at any time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The Associate Director serves on the Emergency Management and Operations Team and university and divisional committees, working groups, and task forces as assigned based upon the needs of the department and university. Meets weekly with the Director to provide staff, operations, and budget updates, engage in planning, and make recommendations about policies, programs, and services. The Associate Director also manages various department projects at the direction of the Director. Attends meetings and other functions on behalf of the Director in the Director's absence and at their direction. Other duties as assigned.


Marginal Job Functions

May be required to work after business hours, on weekends, or holidays to respond to major incidents or provide event support on- and/or off-campus.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience.
  • Public Safety training and experience in response to crimes in progress, crisis assessment, and emergency management demonstrating the application of the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to lead the Department of Public Safety.
  • Knowledge of Public Safety policies and practices, including legal, technical, organizational, and risk management.
  • Experience supervising officer-level and supervisor-level staff. Demonstrated skill in responding to incidents, incident reporting, data management, use of information and communications systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders in a diverse community and to maintain calm while working in high stress situations.
  • CPR/AED certification.


Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A. in Criminal Justice or related field plus 5 years of related experience.
  • Previous experience in Public Safety on a college or university campus.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $90,000 - $95,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate's gender or any other protected status.
